Boys to be offered vaccination against HPV, a leading cause of mouth cancer

HPV Vaccination in the Fight against Oral Cancer

More than 7,500 people in Britain are diagnosed with mouth cancer every year. It claims in excess of 2,000 lives – more than testicular and cervical cancer combined. HPV (human papilloma virus) is recognised to be one of the leading causes of oral cancer, alongside smoking.

Since 2008, girls have been offered a HPV vaccination through a school based programme. Oral health groups have since campaigned for the vaccination to also be offered to school age boys in the fight against oral cancer.

We are delighted with Jeremy Hunt's announcement that boys will now be offered the vaccination and await further information about how this will be provided to our patients and boys in our community.
